This image shows Sappho’s Reverie by W Kray. The Greek lyric poet Sappho, who flourished in the early 6th century B.C., was born on the Aegean island of Lesbos. While there is much legend about her, the facts are few. Only fragments of her verse survive, and they are classic examples of the 'pure' love lyric, with its traits of strong expression of passion and perfect control of meter. Wilhelm Kray (died 1889) was a German painter.
