When Mehmed II (formerly spelled Mohammed II)  ascended the throne again in 1451 he strengthened the Ottoman navy and made preparations to attack Constantinople. At the age of 21, he conquered Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul) and brought an end to the Byzantine Empire (his entry into the city seen here). Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant (also known as Benjamin Constant), born Jean-Joseph Constant (1845 –1902), was a French painter and etcher best known for his Oriental subjects and portraits.
