This image shows the entry of Geoffrey of Bouillon into Jerusalem by Karl von Piloty. Godfrey de Bouillon (c. 1058–1100) was the duke of Lower Lorraine, leader of the First Crusade, and elected king of Jerusalem, which he helped capture, but took the title of 'protector of the holy Sepulchre.' His brother Baldwin succeeded him. Seen here is his entry into Jerusalem in 1099. Karl Theodor von Piloty (1826 –1886) was a German painter, noted for his historical subjects, and recognized as the foremost representative of the realistic school in Germany.
