This 1899 illustration shows: “Ralph Waldo Emerson - photo from life.” Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) was an American essayist, lecturer, and poet. He led the Transcendentalist movement in the mid-19th century. Among his best known essays are  'Nature' and 'Self-Reliance.' He was a friend of Henry David Thoreau. His home was in Concord, Massachusetts. For two years he lived in a cabin in Concord by what is known today as Walden Pond.
