This 1899 illustration shows Catherine of Russia as painted by Ossani. Catherine the Great (1729-1796) was born Princess Sophie of Anhalt-Zerbst in Prussia. She married the future Peter IIII of Russia in 1744, and in 1762, with a group of conspirators, deposed Peter and proclaimed herself empress of Russia. Alexandro Ossani is a British artist (died 1891).
