William M. Evarts (1818-1901) was born in Massachusetts. He won renown as a lawyer and statesmen. He served as a US Senator from New York, US Attorney General under Preident Andrew Johnson, and US Secretary of State under Rutherford B. Hayes. Evarts represent the renowned clergyman Henry Ward Beecher. Evarts led the fund raising efforts for a pedestal for the Statue of Liberty. He served as chief counsel for andrew Johnson at his impeachment trial.
