Diogenes, c. 412-323 B.C., was a Greek cynic philosopher who lived in Athens. He stressed the belief in the simple life by living in a tub. He is said to have gone about in daylight carrying a lantern, looking for someone showing proper human virtue. According to Plutarch, Alexander the Great met Diogenes in Corinth (see here in this early 1900s illustration) and when he asked the cynic what he might do for him, Diogenes is said to have replied, 'Move out of my sunlight.'.
