The caption for this 1917 illustration reads: “What day of the month is it he said— Alice in Wonderland.” The illustration accompanies text in Chapter VII – The Tea Party. The text runs: `What day of the month is it?' he said, turning to Alice: he had taken his watch out of his pocket, and was looking at it uneasily, shaking it every now and then, and holding it to his ear. Alice considered a little, and then said `The fourth.” Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is an 1865 English children's novel by Lewis Carroll. A young girl named Alice falls through a rabbit hole into a fantasy world of anthropomorphic creatures. It is seen as an example of the literary nonsense genre.
