The caption accompanying this 1903 illustration in Gaston Maspero’s book on Egypt reads: “Paintings of chairs in the fifth tomb of the kings to the East Thebes - Byban el Molouk.” Byban (also Biban) el Molouk is a narrow valley of central Egypt near the site of ancient Thebes between Karnak and Luxor. The valley contains the tombs of numerous pharaohs of the XVIII, XIX, and XX Dynasties, including that of Tutankhamun. The  area is known as the valley of the Kings and the Fifth Tomb is KV5, built to house the sons of Ramses II.
