This 1903 illustration shows a frieze of archers at Susa. Shown here is part of the relief frieze in colored glazed tile from the Audience Hall (known as the apadana) of the royal palace at Susa (in present-day Iran). The figures represent members of the powerful royal bodyguard of a Persian king around 400 B.C. , the time of Darius I, who invaded Greece and started what is known today as the Persian Wars (the Greeks being the victors). Darius I built the palace. This relief is now housed in the Louvre in Paris, France.
