This image of a Howling or Whirling Dervish dates to 1903. A dervish is a member of any of various Muslim ascetic orders, some of which perform whirling dances and vigorous chanting as acts of ecstatic devotion. Dervishes are known for their worship rituals which require a dervish to spin very fast causing his clothing to fan out in a circle. The men wear large circular skirts to capitalize on this effect.
