The caption on this 1903 image reads: Facade of the Palace of Darius in Persepolis. It appeared in the book History of Egypt by French Egyptologist Gaston Maspero. Darius was the name of three well-known kings of Persia. Darius I, or Darius the Great, spearheaded the Persian Wars that almost conquered Greece. The empire of Darius III (died 330 B.C.) fell to Alexander the Great. In this image is the name Darius written in cuneiform characters, in the  Persian, Scythian, and Babylonian alphabets.
