Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543) was anoutstanding artist of German Renaissance. He spent early half of life in Basel, where he was friends with Erasmus, whose Praise of Folly he iillustrated and of whom he painted many portraits. He became painter to Henry VIII in 1535. Among his best paintings are George Gisze, The Ambassadors, Portrait of a Man, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Erasmus, Sir Richard Southwell, and Sir Henry Wyatt.
