The Battle of Shiloh, also known as the Battle of Pittsburgh Landing, was fought on April 6-7, 1862 in southwestern Tennessee. The confrontation was an important one in the so-called 'Western Theater' of the United States Civil War. Shown here are members of the union Army, which was under the command of Major General Ulysses S. Grant. The Confederates appeared to be winning on April 6, but were defeated on the following day.
