Otto von Bismarck was a Prussian stateman who played a key role in German and European politics from the 1860s to 1890. In this painting by the contemporary German painter Ludwig Braun, Bismarck is shown with his horse on the outskirts of Paris in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. The Prussians, with the help of the Germans, defeated the French and France had to surrender Alsace and part of Lorraine.
