This illustration of the Austrian composer and pianist Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart singing his requiem was done by American artist Thomas W. Shields in 1885. It shows an ill Mozart, sitting on a cushion and covered with fur singing with a string trio and piano at left. Behind Mozart are three other men, a woman bending down toward Mozart, and a decanter and glass on the table. The requiem was composed in 1791 and left unfinished at the time of Mozart's death in 1792.
