This carved relief shows the head of Amenhotep III with the royal crown and rearing cobra. It was uncovered in Thebes. Amenhotep III was the ninth pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty (New Kingdom). His rule marked the high point of Egyptian civilization. He ruled Egypt from about 1390–1352 B.C. A great builder, Amenhotep controlled an empire that stretched from Syria to Nubia to the western shore of the Red Sea. His successor was his son, Amenhotep IV, the king who changed his name to Akhenaten and called for the worship of the Aten, the light in the sun disk.
