Shown here are late 1800s engravings of Spanish doubloons. The portrait here is Philip II of Spain. He ruled Spain from 1556 to 1598 and Portugal from 1581 to 1598. As the husband of Queen Mary of England, he was king of England and Ireland 1544-1588. Philip was the ruler responsible for the Spanish Armada. Doubloons were monetary gold coins minted in Spain, Mexico, Peru, and Nueva Grande.
