Maximilien de Bethune, duke of Sully,  (1560-1641) was a French noble, soldier, and statesman. He was also a key official and advisor to the French king Henry IV and helped him build a strong centralized government. He served as superintendent of finances and grand master of the artillery of France. The text that accompanied this print, reads: The head, after the portrait of the Flemish painter Pourbus that belonged to the Duke de Sully. It was designed by Gabriel de Saint-Aubin and engraved by Chenu.
