This scene shows the attempt against Henry IV on the Pont-Neuf. This deed is recorded in the memories of l'Estoile (1605). The author of this piece, a man by the name of Jacques de Iles, did not succeed in taking the king by his mantle; but, grasped the knife of a carrier he declared that he wished to kill the king. Despite that, by the express order of the king who wished to see in him a madman, he was not put on trial.
