This late 19the-century illustration shows a tablet to the memory of Jerry McAuley on the wall of the Water Street Mission. In 1872 businessman Frederick Hatch bought the property in Lower Manhattan that became the Water Street Mission. He had met Jerry McAuley and put him in charge of this new venture - America's first Rescue Mission.
