The illustration shows the bringing of the remains of the assassinated Henri III to Poissy, in north-central France. The caption that accompanied it in an 1878 text noted that all were traveling from Paris along Montorgueil Street to Bon Pasteur. Henri III had been assassinated by a religious fanatic, a Dominican friar named Jacques Clement, on August 1 1589. It was the time of the Protestant Reformation and conflicts known as the Wars of Religion.
