In this 1907 illustration is shown an English man in the time of William (1066-1087). He wears a cloak buckled at the shoulder, leather thongs crossed on his legs, shows of leather, and a tunic fitting to his body like a jersey. William I, also known as William the Conqueror, was the first Norman king of England (1066-1087). William invaded English in 1066 and defeated the English earl Harold at the Battle of Hastings in October. He was crowned on Christmas Day.
