This illustration appeared in the London-based Penrose Pictorial Annual of 1900. The publication was a London-based review of the graphic arts that ran from 1895 to 1982. This image shows General Sir George White (1835–1912). He is best known as the commander of Ladysmith (in Zulu land in South Africa) during the Second Boer War during the South African War (1899-1902). He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his heroism in the Second Afghan War. In 1900 he became commander in chief of Gibraltar. He was a son of a Gordon Highlander.
