The Battle of Buena Vista in 1847 marked a turning point in the U.S.-Mexican War. Because General Santa Anna decided to attack General Zackary Taylor, he did not reinforce Vera Cruz. General Winfield Scott, commander of all US forces in Mexico, landed his men in Mexico in early March and laid siege to Vera Cruz on the 9th. Vera Cruz surrendered on March 29, paving the way for Scott to lead his march on Mexico City.
