The USS Cumberland was sunk by the CSS Virginia, formerly the USS Merrimack, on March 8, 1862 during the American Civil War. The sinking occurred off Newport News, Virginia, and was a demonstration of the ironclad's superiority in battle. Sailors who have abandoned ship are being rescued by nearby small sailboats and rowboats.
