The caption for this image reads: “On replying yes, something was put down on a piece of pace, and he was waved outside.” Omoo or “A Narrative of Adventures in the South Seas,” is a novel by the American novelist Herman Melville. Published in 1847, it was a sequel to Melville’s novel Typee. Based on his own experiences in the South Pacific, this episodic novel, in a more comical vein than that of Typee, tells of the narrator’s participation in a mutiny on a whale ship and his subsequent wanderings in Tahiti with the ship’s former doctor, Long Ghost. Herman Melville (1819-1891) was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet of the American Renaissance period. Among his best-known works are Moby-Dick; Typee (a romanticized account of his experiences in Polynesia), Omoo, and Billy Budd. The illustrator is Mead Schaeffer.
