Mephistopheles and Faust

Mephistopheles is a demon in German folklore. He originally appeared in the Faust legend about a historical scholar named Johann Georg Faust who wagers his sould with the devil. The German author Johann Wolfgang von Goethe incoroporated the tale into his tragedy titled Faust, which was published in the early 1800s. In this late 19th-century illustration, Faust (seated) is shown bargaining with Mephistopheles.
