Knight, Death, and Devil by Durer

Légende

Albrecht Durer (1471-1528) was a German artist well known for his prints and drawings of keen observation and rich detail. He was born in Nuremberg and had a studio there. This woodcut, dating to 1513, by Durer is titled Knight, Death, and Devil. Durer called it The Knight. Note the plaque at bottom left, with Durer's initials: AD. The Knight is not influenced by anything, continues on his path. He is shown in traditional equestrian pose. The Devil with his grin and pig nose is powerless when the rider pays him no attention. Thr other figure represents death and holds an hourglass to remind the knight that time on earth is brief.
