Chinese Punishment

A common punishment for a crime in China, up until the early 20th century, was to put a collar of wood around the neck of the guilty party. The collar came to be known by the name given it by the Portuguese who saw it, cangue. There were various forms of collars, but the intent was that the person could not feed himself and had to depend on others to give him food. Many of the collars were quite heavy. Here we see a man in a collar, with his head through one hole and his hand in another. Another man has a whip and also holds a chain attached to the collar. The illustration dates to 1843.
