Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) was a British man of letters. After working as a teacher and tutor, he became the interpreter of German Romanticism in his Life of Schiller and translation of Goethe's Wilhelm Meister. He was a sharp critic of British society, and he believed that people could be saved from their woes by great men. He was very influential in his time, as was his wife Jane Baille Welsh Carlyle, who gained fame as a letter writer. This image was done by James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), the acclaimed American, but British-based, painter born in Lowell, Massachusetts. He saw a parallel between painting and music. Among his best-known works are Whistler's Mother, Thomas Carlyle, Arrangement in Pink Red and Purple, and Mother of Pearl and Silver: The Andalusian.
