The 1903 caption reads: ""Childhood of Christ from painting by Hoffman 1824."" Jesus is the Greek name for the Hebrew Joshua (savior). Christ is the Greek translation of the Hebrew Messiah (anointed). For Christians, Jesus Christ is the founder of Christianity. This illustration shows Jesus as a young boy working with and helping his father, Joseph. Pictured also is his mother, Mary. Hans Hofmann (died 1966) was a German-born American painter, renowned as both an artist and teacher. His career spanned two generations and two continents, and is considered to have both preceded and influenced Abstract Expressionism.
