The caption for this illustration reads: Pray give me your hand so that I may see your ring. According to the tale: A rich man sent his son to trade, but the son took pity on slaves and used his money to free them. Among them was a tsar's daughter and her nurse. The girl and boy fell in love and married The boy's father was furious but relented and sent him again and again into the world to trade each time, the boy gave his money to help less fortunate. By c hnace they met up with the tsar, but the tsar's minister decieved the boy and threw him overboard. He landed on a baren island, where a man helped him, in return for half of whatever he would have. The boy reaches the town of the tsar and sees his wife, about to marry the minister. He puts out his hand, with his wedidng ring (see here). She sees it and the story and treachery are known. The old man asks for his half, the boy gives it to him. But the man says he is an angel, rewarding him for his good deeds and vanishes. The illustration is from a 1921 book on Serbian myths and legends.
