Antigone was the daughter of the Greek king of Thebes Oedipus and his wife Jocasta. Oedipus had unknowingly killed his father Laius and married his mother. After Oedipus blinded himself, having discovered the truth about his parentage and his marriage, he left Thebes. Antigone went with him, along with her sister Ismene, and stayed with him until his death. She then returned to Thebes. This early 20th-century illustration shows the blind Oedipus, with his daughter Antigone as guide, in the lands beyond the city of Thebes.
