Beowulf is the title of the oldest English epic, probably composed early 8th-century by Anglian bard in the vicinity of Northumbria. The hero of the epic is Beowulf. He received the sword Naegling, said to be the best in the world, after defeating the monster Grendel and Grendel's mother. The sword does not survive his fight with the dragon (pictured in this 1923 drawing) and snaps in two.
