According to Norse and Germanic mythology, Wayland was a legendary hero and a great blacksmith. Legends say that he was the son of the king of the Finns. Another king, Niohad, was said to have captured him in his sleep and then imprisoned him, forcing Wayland to craft various items for his (Niohad's) family. It happened that Niohad's daughter brough Wayland the ring that had been Wayland's wife's. The daughter wanted it fixed. Wayland took the ring, apprehended the daughter, and then, in time, fashioned wings, which he used to escape Niohad's prison and lands. This early 20th-century illustration shows Wayland about to escape using his newly fashioned wings.
