El Cid Campeador (Spanish for ""lord, master of military arts"") was the name given to Rodrigo, or Ruy, Diaz de Vivar (c. 1040-1099), a nobleman in the court of Castile (Spain) who is today a renowned Spanish folk hero. He served under Castilian kings and was involved in the struggle between the Christian rulers and Muslim rulers for control of Spain. El Cid, also known as Cid Campeador (died 1099), is a Spanish national hero. At one point in his career, he was banished by the king of Spain but later recalled. When El Cid's father asks El Cid to avenge an insult made to him, El Cid honors his father's wish. However, the person he has to kill is Don Gomez, the father of his fiancee (Jimena). Honor prevails and El Cid does - seen here in this illustration.
