Joan of Arc (born c. 1412; died 1431), a French saint and national heroine, led the French army to several victories against the English in the Hundred Years' War. She said she heard the voices of Saint Michael, Saint Catherine, and Saint Margaret , who ordered her to aid the king of France and assured her that God will help her. Here, in this illustration by Edward Dalziel, Joan of Arc is shown tending her flock. This drawing accompanied Charles Dickens' account of the tale in his book ""A Child's History of England."".
