This is what Alice saw once she went through the Looking Glass and into the Looking Glass room in Lewis Carroll's ""Through the Looking Glass."" Here are the Red Qeen and the Red King. To the right is a White Pawn that has rolled over and has started kicking. Alice has just stepped through the mantle mirror in her house into another world, where she is in a sunny spring garden. The flowers can speak and there she meets the Red Queen and Red King, who are human-size. The Queen tells Alice that the garden is like a huge chessboard and that she can make Alice a queen if she can make it to the eighth rank in a chess match.
