The caption for this illustration, which dates to around 1865, reads: as soon as he found himself alone between the sky and the water, he abandoned himself to a sort of noisy joy. The boy here is Benjamn Franklin and the year is 1715 and Franklin is eight or nine. He, so the story goes, was accustomed to go swimming every evening in Boston Roads, near where he lived. He would swim offshore and often head for a barge temporarily abandoned by its owners  and practice steering. You can see the boat there.
