This late 19th-century illustration shows homeless boys in New York City. The caption reads: ""Waifs and Strays of a Great City. , A Group of Homeless New York Newsboys. The names of the boys are, right to left: Whitey, Dutchy, Yaller, Slobbery Jack,King of Bums, King of Crapshooters, Bumlets, Sheeny, The Snitcher, Snoddy, Kelly the Rake. Most of the boys who frequent the Newsboys Lodging Houses are waifs, pure and simple. They have never known a mother's or a father's care, and have no sense of identity. As a rule, they are known by nicknames, and then generally speak of each other only by these names.
