This line drawing from 1898 shows the Greek goddess Athene (also spelled Athena)  - holding the shield. This grouping was part of the altar frieze at Pergamon. Pergamon was an ancient city  in Asia Minor ( present-day Turkey). The altar at Pergamon (also spelled Pergamum) was built in the second half of the second century B.C. The ruler at that time was Eumenes II. Tondeur is credited with the restoration.
