This statue shows the god of war Mars (Ares to the Greeks). In ancient Roman religion and myth, Mars also an agricultural guardian, a combination characteristic of early Rome. He was the son of Jupiter and Juno (Zeus and Hera to the Greeks) , and he was the most prominent of the military gods in the religion of the Roman army. The statue is housed in the Glyptothek in Munich. The Glyptothek is a museum in Munich, Germany, which was commissioned by the Bavarian King Ludwig I to house his collection of Greek and Roman sculptures.
