She was one of the chief female goddesses. Beginning in the first millennium B.C., Astarte was revered in Syria and Canaan. Later she was worshiped byt the people of Cyprus and then she came to be worshiped by the Mycenaeans. In time, her worship merged and she became Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty.
