This illustration dates to around 1898 and shows the Hindu deity Vishnu. Vishnu was honored as the second god of the Trimurti, or the Hindu trinity. He was the preserver god. Shesha, the king of the nagas (primal beings of creation), is usually shown as a huge form that floats coiled in space or on the great ocean. There Shesha forms the bed on which Vishnu lies. Sometimes - as here - Shesha is shown as a five-headed serpent (but there can be as many as several hundred serpent heads).
