This particular statue of the Greek god Apollo (also known by the Romans as Apollo) is housed at the Vatican and is a Roman copy fashioned in marble of the Greek original that was cast in bronze. It is one of the best known of ancient Classical sculptures and its fame is due in large part to the German art historian and archaeologist Johann Winckelmann, who praised it as the highest expression of ancient art. It dates to the second century A.D. The original dated to 330-320 B.C. and was the work of the sculptor Leochares.
