This 1870s illustration shows the slide valve that was part of the steam engine. the Scottish inventor and mechanical engineer. James Watt (1736-1819) was said to have discovered the power of steam when he placed his hand in front of kettle that held a very hot liquid. Watt's improvements to the steam engine were key to the changes that came with the Industrial Revolution.
