Sinbad the Sailor is of Middle Eastern origin. His tale is, in modern times, often connected with and/or included in The Thousand and One Nights, or the Arabian Nights, but it originally was not part of it. After spending the fortune left to him by his father, Sindbad does to make his and lands on what he thinks is an island, but it proves to be a whale. When Sindbad and his mates light a fire, it wakens the whale, who tosses them off as he shakes, as seen here in this early 1900s illustration.
