This early 1900s illustration shows Aladdin and the magic lamp. The tale is a folktale and probably originated in the Middle East. His tale is often connected with and/or included in The Thousand and One Nights, or the Arabian Nights. It is not one of the original tales but one included by the Frenchman Antoine Galland. Aladdin is a poor man in China  who is recruited by a sorcerer named Mustapha. Mustapha wants Aladdin to retrieve a magic oil lamp from a cave, as seen here.
