This illustration dates to around 1846 and shows Christopher Columbus in chains. Columbus had presented his proposal to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella at Alcazar Castle in Cordoba in January 1492.In 1500, Francisco de Bobadilla was appointed by the Spanish crown to succeed Columbus as second govenror of the Indies. When he arrived there, Bobadilla had Columbus arrested on charges of mismanagement, put in chains, and sent back to Spain.
